How Much Extra Flooring Should You Order?

Learn why flooring projects need extra material for cuts, waste and future repairs, especially when buying closeout flooring in Los Angeles.

Do not order the exact measured square footage

Flooring has to be cut around walls, columns, doorways and irregular rooms. Some pieces will be unusable after cuts, and some cartons may contain boards you choose not to install because of visual variation or damage. That is why professional estimates include waste.

Layout affects waste

A simple rectangular room is more efficient than a space with many angles, small rooms or diagonal layouts. Herringbone and other patterned installations usually create more cuts than straight plank layouts. The installer should determine the appropriate waste factor for the design.

Closeout material needs additional planning

When buying discontinued or overstock flooring, future availability may be limited. Keeping extra cartons can be valuable for repairs after water damage, tenant turnover, fixture changes or accidental damage. This is particularly important for commercial and multifamily projects.

Phase large projects carefully

If you are flooring multiple Los Angeles units or a large office in phases, confirm whether the entire quantity comes from the same lot. It is safer to secure enough material for the planned phase rather than assume the identical product will still be available months later.

Measure first, then shop

Bring your measured square footage to Last Pallet in Torrance and discuss the layout and use with your installer. The goal is to buy enough material to complete the project confidently without loading the job with unnecessary excess.
