How to Calculate How Much Flooring You Need for a Commercial Project

Start with the floor plan

The simplest method is to divide the space into rectangles, multiply length by width for each area and add the totals. For irregular spaces, calculate smaller sections separately. Architectural plans can make this easier, but field measurements should still be confirmed before ordering.

Remove only what truly does not receive flooring

Permanent shafts, large built-ins and areas using another floor finish may be excluded. Be careful about subtracting every cabinet or small obstruction because flooring may run underneath certain fixtures depending on the installation plan.

Add waste

The measured area is not the order quantity. Cuts, layout, plank direction and pattern all create waste. Ask the installer for the project-specific allowance, particularly with diagonal layouts or complicated floor plans.

Convert to cartons and pallets

Flooring is sold by the carton, not by individual square foot. Divide the required square footage by the coverage per carton, then round up. If you are buying warehouse or closeout material, also confirm how many complete cartons are in the available lot.
